Allan has spent all his working life (almost thirty years) in the advertising industry, both in New Zealand and Australia as a designer illustrator. During recent years, he has been commissioned by national and international companies to work on the endemic and endangered species, and his work has been endorsed and commended by the World Wildlife Fund for Nature. He has also had his bird paintings represented on the Trustbank calendars.

Allan's work involves a watercolour gouache method which allows for the very fine detail of nature. He is regarded by many as the best in his field on the New Zealand art scene. He has been awarded five New Zealand national awards, as well as one Australian national award.
