
Recognised as one of New Zealand's outstanding artists, Austen Deans, who was born in Christchurch in 1915, came from pioneer stock. During WWII, he was an assistant to war artist Peter McIntyre, and after the war studied art in England at the Sir John Cass College, before returning to New Zealand to live and work. He has won numerous National Art Awards, and is well represented in the major art galleries in New Zealand, as well as having work in private collections around the world.
