Using traditional brush painting techniques, Sandra has developed an idiosyncratic 'freedom' style. Sandra lived and painted in Singapore for 6 years, where she studied under the reputed Singapore Chinese brush painting Master Tan Khim Ser.
All her Chinese art is painted on rice paper - paper that has the consistency of tissue paper and the absorption capability of blotting paper. Traditional Chinese brushes made from rabbit, wolf, leopard and horse tail hair are used.
Chinese painters typically mix paints on the brush, not the paper. (Rice paper is very fragile.) Sandra also 'sprays' and 'drops' paint for special effect.
Chinese paintings are incomplete without calligraphy and the artist's 'chops' or 'seals'. Calligraphy on the exhibited works is by the Master Tan Khim Ser, President, Singapore Life Art Society. His calligraphy style matches Sandra's 'freedom' style. It is a long-standing practice (dating back many centuries) for another artist to complete the calligraphy.
Sandra's chops include a signature chop 'Santi', and several 'proverb' chops with typical Chinese greetings and good luck, health and prosperity.
