The book, 'Bishop Monrad in Aotearoa New Zealand has been described as what will come to be known as the definitive publication about the Danish Prime minister and Lutheran Bishop Ditlev Gothard Monrad's life and his legacy to New Zealand.
'Bishop Monrad in Aotearoa' was launched at St Pauls Lutheran Church, Wellington
on Wednesday evening the 21st of September by Her Excellency Mrs Susanne Shine Danish Ambassador to New Zealand.
The translated letters from the Bishop and his wife Emilie give a new perspective on their life here in New Zealand. And, there is one from Mrs Monrad describing their first experience of an earth quake – a giant hand shaking the house.
Victoria Robson, Curator European Art, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa made a major contribution by reviewing the background to and details
of the gift of etchings and engravings which are cared for and treasured at the Museum.
Ian Macfarlane, editor and publisher has praised her illustrated article as a major contribution to our knowledge and appreciation of the Monrad Collection.
The section which traces the history of the Lutheran Church of New Zealand to the present day is a scholarly exposition of the Lutheran Confession and acknowledges
the Monrad line right back to Martin Luther himself in the early 1500s.
'Bishop Monrad in Aotearoa' is a timely and appropriate commemoration of the bicentenary of his birth. The Bishop's actual birthday will be celebrated in Wellington with a Danish Dinner on Thursday the 24th of November.
New Zealand is the richer for his time spent here and for his priceless gift to our nation.
